Press Release Date: 10th May 2018
Adil Hussain known for his critically acclaimed films such as Life of Pi, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, English Vinglish, Parched and most recently Mukti Bhawan, joins Pickurflick as a mentor & brand ambassador.
Pickurflick is a video-on-demand platform for curated, acclaimed and award-winning cinema from around the world.
Adil has received global acclaim for his repertoire of work and won the Special Mention at the 64th National Film Award in 2017 for his performance in ‘Mukti Bhawan’ and Assamese film ‘Maj Rati Keteki’. He was chosen as the Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Norwegian Film ‘What Will People Say‘ by Iram Haq and received the Norwegian Equivalent of Academy Award called Kanon Prisen Award in Norway in March 2018. ‘What will People Say’ also won the Audience Dragon award for ‘Best Nordic Film’ in Sweden’s prestigious Göteborg Film Festival.
Speaking about his association with Pickurflick, Adil said “I strongly believe that all art forms play a very important role in the process of evolution of human consciousness, if practiced diligently, honestly and with a pure heart. Cinema is one of the most powerful mediums of art in the history of human civilization because of the nature of potential intimacy that it can create between the audience and the content. Depriving audiences from watching meaningful cinema is a disservice to the society. This is one of the very important reasons why I have been acting in meaningful films by independent producers and directors throughout my journey in the world of cinema. I have always subscribed to online portals to watch meaningful cinema and had quite often been unsuccessful in finding films recommended by my trusted friends, teachers and other sources. Hence, I have joined as one of the Board Members and the Brand Ambassador of Pickurflick which will showcase and curate the films produced by rather unknown young and old filmmakers who do not find any platform to present their art work. I am very glad that Pickurflick has initiated this monumental effort to bring these hidden gems to the common people, through the portal and through its film festival”.
Started in 2016, Pickurflick helps independent film makers to showcase & distribute their films online, across formats like short films, feature, documentary & animation. The platform currently has over 200 titles from regional & international cinema which is available for viewing on a freemium basis. To showcase & recognize indie film makers from across the globe, the platform kickstarted ‘Pickurflick Indie Film Festival (PIFF)’ in 2017. The inaugural edition received more than 550 films from 50 countries out of which 170 films were screened at Delhi & Bangalore with a jury comprising of renowned names from Indian cinema. PIFF is an IMDb official event and is rated amongst the top unconventional film festivals in India.
Commenting on the association, Abhishek Sinha, founder of Pickurflick said “Adil is one of the most critically acclaimed actors of recent times who has been actively supporting indie films especially regional cinema. It is an honor & a privilege to have him on board, and his support will bolster the efforts of the platform in showcasing indie films and benefit independent film makers globally.”
Brand consultant, Founder, Design Worldwide and Advisor to PickurFlick Sanjay Sarma adds, “Adil is one of the finest talents of our generation. To have someone of his stature believe in the vision of the platform gives us tremendous confidence. Going forward, Pickurflick will be the platform of choice for indie film makers to distribute their content; offering curation and content discovery for audiences with an appetite for eclectic cinema.”
Utpal Borpujari, who won the 65th National Award for Best Assamese Film in 2018 for his directorial debut ‘Ishu’, is also associated with Pickurflick as a Mentor & Creative Advisor. “It gives me immense pleasure on being part of the PickurFlick Indie cinema movement and it is really great to have Adil Hussain as the Brand Ambassador of PickurFlick. An actor par excellence, Adil’s commitment to independent cinema is widely known, and as such, his association with PickurFlick will enhance the value of the concept behind it. PickurFlick is a platform purely for independent cinema, and, therefore, it is quite unique in its intent.”, said Utpal.
Another eminent personality on board is National award-winning film critic, screenwriter and editor Saibal Chatterjee, who will be spearheading the ‘Pickurflick Indie Film Festival’(PIFF) as its Festival Director this year. He said, “These are exciting times for independent cinema in India. With Adil Hussain, one of the leading lights in this fresh burst of creativity, on board as a mentor, PickurFlick hopes to capture and showcase the work of the new filmmaking and acting talents who are driving this game-changing movement.”
Over the next 5 years, Pickurflick has a vision to emerge as a comprehensive eco-system for production, aggregation and distribution of independent cinema and be a knowledge driven resource for both film makers and audiences.
