Nicholas Kharkongor’s debut movie Mantra has a stellar cast including Rajat Kapoor, Kalki Koechlin, Shiv Pandit, Lushin Dubey, Rohan Joshi, and Adil Hussain. Nicholas who hails from Shillong is the first filmmaker from Meghalaya to venture into Hindi cinema.

Mantra tells us the story of Kapil Kapoor, a businessman and his family, who stays in Delhi, in the backdrop of changing India in the first decade of the new millennium. Kapil’s company, King Chips, is going bankrupt. He speaks about the need to stop his powerful multinational rival, Kipper. In some quarters in the Capital of India, the fruits of economic liberalization are being gobbled up.

In a powerful subplot, the police won’t register an FIR when the businessman’s daughter, Piya, approaches them with a complaint of molestation. Overall, Mantra touches upon crucial issues of the time.

Through his story, director Nicholas Kharkongor seeks to document the turmoil of the post-liberalisation years.
